The Iraq war has endangered the lives of Christians across the Middle East, the Archbishop of Canterbury said in a scathing commentary on Saturday that criticised the US-led coalition for ignoring warnings that this would happen.

Rowan Williams, the Anglican spiritual leader, wrote in a commentary in The London Times that Christians are increasingly being seen as 8220;supporters of the crusading West8221;.

The British government rejected that assessment. 8220;We disagree with his views. We don8217;t think that it is our policies in Iraq that cause suffering of Christians,8221; the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Williams said another source of the problem was the Israeli-built wall around the traditional site of Jesus8217; birth in Bethlehem.

In an interview with the BBC on Saturday, Williams said the situation for Christians in Iraq is now worse than it was when Saddam Hussein was in power.
