Till about three days ago, not many people knew who Iqbal Abbas Sheikh was. He was just a small-time corporator and only complainants from his ward sought him. However, after the attack on Rohidas Wada at Kalyan, he is now sought by the entire police force of Thane. He has been named as one of the prime accused in the rioting and murder of Ashok Walunj and he remains underground.

Assistant Commissioner Amar Jadhav, under whose jurisdiction the riot-hit area falls, said that Sheikh 28 was one of the accused in the rioting: 8216;8216;There is no prima facie evidence. He has been named as one of the accused based on the statements of the victims. So far he has been untraceable. Only after interrogation, we will be able to establish the nature of his involvement.8221;

Sheikh, a first-time corporator from Ward No. 46 in the Kalyan civic body, had been elected with a thumping majority on a Nationalist Congress Party ticket. He had defeated his nearest rival from the Shiv Sena, Prakash Walunj, Ashok8217;s elder brother. The rift between Walunj and Sheikh grew when he managed to win from a ward that was till then a Sena stronghold. The ward till then was held by Prakash Walunj8217;s wife Usha.

8216;8216;Sheikh is a person who lives by the live-and-let-live principle. The slum area from which he got elected indulges in several illegal activities. The people voted for him,8217;8217; said a senior BJP leader.

A Muslim community leader said that Sheikh was not a 8220;bad person8221; but he was surrounded by a group of unscrupulous elements who indulged in all kinds of illegal activities. 8216;8216;Now he is paying the price of such association,8217;8217; he said.
