
NEW DELHI, August 30: Despite the continued strike by teachers, the Delhi University inter-college sports activities in the new academic session are expected to begin on September 9 with the aquatic competitions for men and women, to be held at the Punjabi Bagh Pool.
Most of the inter-college tournaments at least 15 disciplines are scheduled to be completed by the end of September, if one goes by the university8217;s sports calendar which was finalised here last week at the office of the Sports Council.
There are 34 disciplines both men and women listed for inter-college competitions to be conducted between September 9 and January 12 next year.
The month of October when the domestic Ranji Trophy season commences, will also witness the start of inter-college matches for men from October 27.
Despite the university finishing a poor third in the overall all-India inter-varsity tournaments last year, some of the Directors of Physical Education DPE have expressed apprehension about the proper completion of inter-college tournaments prior to zonal and inter-varsity competitions.
A senior official of the sports council, on condition of annonimity, said most of the DPEs were to be blamed for the non-completion of several inter-college tournaments as 8220;they were not willing to spend time on the playfields during weekends when the students are free from college studies.8221; He blamed the five-day week as the main reason for non-completion8217; of tournaments.
Delhi University will conduct the All India inter-varsity squash rackets tournament from January 18 next year.
