NEW DELHI, MAY 31: Intel today slashed list prices for its desktop and mobile processor by 29 to 44 per cent, faced with stiff competition from arch rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).The new pricing strategy is ahead of a plethora of chip launches from Intel and its rival AMD in June. However, the company official said the company expected supply to be tight during the second quarter, but would be caught up with the transition into new manufacturing process of 0.18 micron level.AMD had announced that it would launch its low-end `Duron' chip and high-end `Thunderbird' processor for performance PCs in June. Intel had also said it would come out with more Celerons and introduce its 815 chipset, a companion chip that connect the processor with the rest of the PC and thereby offering faster graphics technology and other speed improvements.The cut in prices for Pentium III line are 20 to 31 per cent with no drop for the Giga Hertz chip and the recently introduced 933 MHz processor. The cut includes a 24 per cent drop on the 866 MHz chip, a 25 per cent cut on 850 MHz processor and a 31 per cent fall for the 800 MHz one.The cut in low-end Celeron processor was modest with prices down by only five per cent to 19 per cent.On the mobile side, Intel slashed its three fastest Pentium III chips by 31 to 34 per cent, leaving unchanged the prices for laptop chips of 500 MHZ and below.The steepest cut came in its Celeron line for notebook computers, which saw cuts of upto 44 per cent on the 550 MHz range which drops to 96 US dollar. The 500 MHz and 450 MHz fell by 33 per cent and 18 per cent.Prices of 866 MHz Xeon processor were slashed by 23 percent to $ 612 and its 800 MHz Xeon was cut by 29 per cent to $ 435.
