Naval missile boat INS Prahar sank late last night, 35 km off the coast of Goa, after colliding with a merchant vessel MV Rajiv Gandhi. The accident is reported to have occurred around 9.45 pm and the ship sank just after midnight.
All 73 crew members of the Naval vessel have been rescued. The merchant ship, which suffered negligible damage and is docked at the Goa port, belongs to the Shipping Corporation of India.
The Navy is now deeply concerned with what it feels was a freak incident that should never have happened. A Naval team from Western Command is now investigating the incident and interrogating the rescued officers currently in Goa.
After a meticulous rescue operation last night by two Naval ships, two Coast Guard boats, a Dornier-228 aircraft and two Chetak choppers, the International Rules of the Road will now have to be invoked to judge which vessel is to blame for the collision.
A Naval spokesperson said, 8220;Prahar had no chance. The merchant vessel was huge, at almost 30,000 tonnes8230;Salvage operations for the sunk ship will be studied once initial investigations are through. Thankfully, there have been no casualties.8221;
