ITALY

Italy8217;s 2-1 victory over Austria ended on a bitter note here on Tuesday night, when injured Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta was sent home with torn cruciate ligaments. Nesta will board a Rome-bound flight on Wednesday after a magnetic resonance scan carried out at a Paris clinic showed that the cruciate ligament and the collateral ligament of his right knee had been torn. Coach Cesare Maldini said: quot;The player is not in very good shape. It8217;s a great shame, and we8217;re all very disappointed about it.quot;

ENGLAND

England midfielder Paul Ince has only a 50-50 chance of being fit for Friday8217;s crunch World Cup qualifying encounter with Colombia in Lens. The Liverpool player limped out of action after 30 minutes of Monday8217;s 2-1 defeat by Romania in Toulouse with a recurrence of an ankle ligament problem after falling victim to a heavy early challenge from Gheorghe Hagi. And although the ankle had improved on Tuesday, Ince remains doubtful to face the Colombians.
