CHANDIGARH, June 18: Visiting Union Additional Secretary Home P.D. Shenoy today held discussions with officials of the Chandigarh Administration and industrialists, while making an assessment of UT8217;s Industrial plots scheme in Industrial Area, Phase III, which is pending for many years now.

Shenoy heard the versions of both the Administration and the industrialists who applied for industrial plots under the scheme. This is the first time an official of the Union Government has visited the city to assess the scheme. Shenoy handles the affairs of various Union Territories in the Union Home Ministry.

The visiting official of the Union Government later also visited the site where the industrial plots were to be located. He was accompanied by officials of the Chandigarh Administration.

The scheme, which was floated by the Administration a few years ago, falls in forest area and a decision to which is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court at present. The scheme has been hanging fire for many years now, mainly due to objections by the Union Environment Ministry.

Sources say the Administration had earlier stated before the High Court that it will scrap the scheme. Sources say the forest area on which the site falls has also been partly encroached upon by jhuggi-dwellers of Colony No 4 in Industrial Area.

Incidentally, there are many influential persons who have applied for industrial plots under this scheme, the sources add.

Meanwhile, Shenoy would hold further discussions with officials of the Administration and Municipal Corporation tomorrow, where he would assess the other developmental schemes sponsored by the Centre for the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
