
MURREE PAKISTAN, June 22: The Indo-Pak talks on normalising relations made considerable progress here today and the two sides were close to a successful conclusion, leaders of both delegations said.
8220;We are very close to a final agreement which will emerge in the form of a joint statement,8221; Pakistani Foreign Secretary Shahmshad Ahmed said after a six-hour session in this hill resort.
8220;We will have a closing session late tonight,8221; he added.
Asked about his earlier statement in the morning that it would be a make-or-break session, Ahmed said, 8220;We have made it. We have not broken it8221;.
8220;Together we tackled the remaining problems to create common grounds to accomplish the task,8221; Ahmed said. The 8220;task8221; is an agreed document which they plan to release at the end of the parleys early tomorrow.
Indian Foreign Secretary Salman Haider said the two sides had worked hard and 8220;we have made considerable progress8221;.
He hoped the two delegations 8220;will be able to complete the task8221; in the late evening session.
Asked whether he agreed with the assessment of his Pakistani counterpart, Haider said Ahmed 8220;would not be saying this if I had not agreed with him8221;.The foreign secretaries after a marathon session at the governor house here are to hold a concluding session in Islamabad late today. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also in Murree on a visit during the talks, sources here said.
Pakistan has been keen to get the Kashmir dispute on top of the agenda for negotiations and use the Indian readiness for the formation of a working group on the simmering conflict.
After the sessions so far, none of the officials have confirmed or denied as to whether Kashmir was part of the agenda for discussion.
