CALCUTTA: Local giants Mohun Bagan missed chances galore and survived close calls before humbling Muktijoddha Sansad of Bangladesh 2-1 in an opening round of the Asian Club Cup Championship. Bangladesh outfit, however, are on evenkeel with Bagan, as every away goal is counted as two.

The second leg match between the two sides would be played in Dhaka on September 11. Chima Okerie and Dipendu Biswas scored for Bagan while while Bakhtiaruddin Khan did so for losing side.

India in tough pool

NEW DELHI: India have been placed in difficult group III in the qualifying rounds of 2001 Asia Cup Football Tournament, and will start their campaign against the United Arab Emirates at Abu Dhabi on November 22.

Strong contenders Uzbekistan, and sub-continental rivals Bangladesh and Sri Lanka complete the five-team group, the winner of which will qualify for the tournament proper. The tournament will run from November 20 to 28.

NEW DELHI:Commonwealth Games triple gold medallist K Arumugam has been ranked 21st in the world weightlifting rankings published by Dennis Reno of United States. That is the highest ranking achieved by Indian lifter. The other Indians in the list Wilson 31, Gnanaskekhran 42 and Sandeep Kumar 49.

Rain halts play

CHENNAI: Quarterfinal matches on the second day of the MRF All India Buchi Babu Cricket Tournament were affected by overnight rain, with the match between Andhra and Karnataka XI being washed out without a ball being bowled, while the matches in three other grounds started late and was extended to compensate for the time loss.
Brief scores: ONGC 266-8 vs IOB 162-7; MRF 304 vs Hyderabad 112-3.

CHENNAI: As a prelude to the seventh Asian Table Tennis championship, the Table Tennis Federation of India TTFI will organise a week8217;s coaching camp from August 23 to 29. About 40 players from China, Yemen, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and India will take part in thecamp which would be held as part of the development programme of the Asian Table Tennis Union.
