SILIGURI: Asian Games gold medalist Jyotirmoyee Sikdar expressed frustration at having found no sponsor yet to meet her coaching expenses abroad, required for her participation in Sydney Olympics. “This is painful as sponsors for cricket are readily available,” she lamented.Financial problems have become the bane for Bengal athletes, she said, adding if the situation continued none of the budding talents would take interest in athletics in future.

IOC probe

LAUSANNE: India’s Ashwini Kumar claimed he was innocent when he appeared Sunday before the International Olympic Committee’s ad hoc body which expects to complete its probe into allegations of corruption by March 17.Kumar was among the ten IOC members implicated in the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics bid bribery scandal.

Ajit Naik dead

MUMBAI: Former Ranji cricketer Ajit Naik, 50, passed away after a massive heart attack at Ghaziabad early today. The Worli Sports Club player represented Mumbai in 13 matches between 1970-71 & 1972-73. He scored one century (against Saurashtra) and picked up 27 Ranji wickets (best 5-20 against Baroda).

TN, Bengal in final

NEW DELHI: Custodian V P Satish Kumar emerged the hero as Tamil Nadu defeated Assam 3-1 via tie-breaker, after being locked 1-all, to storm into a final clash against holders Bengal in the 21st Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy National Sub-Junior (U-16) football tournament here on Monday. Satish Kumar came up with three successive saves in the tie-breaker to guide the 1984champions to the final at the Ambedkar Stadium here.
