NEW DELHI: India’s Leander Paes defeated Thomas Shimada 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s singles first round of the Hong Kong Open yesterday. He will meet Rogier Wassen in the second round. However, the other Indian, Mahesh Bhupathi, retired hurt against Lleyton Hewitt after trailing 4-6, 1-1.

Joshi in quarters

MUMBAI: National champion and top seed Devendra Joshi of Mumbai and Antim Singhi of Railways entered the quarter-finals of the NSCI Open all-India invitation snooker tournament here today. Joshi downed former national champion Sarang Shroff of Mumbai 4-3 while Singhi defeated qualifier Manish Adnani of Mumbai 4-2.
