Leaders LIC crush UP

MOGA: LIC crushed Uttar Pradesh 3.5-0.5 in the fourth round of the 21st National Team chess championship here today.

LIC now has 13 points out of a possible 16 and is followed by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) on 11.5 points.

Top seed Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB) trounced Nagpur Chess Academy 3.5-0.5 to bounce back after two successive defeats.

Points (after fourth round): LIC 13, ICF 11.5, BSB 11.0, TN 11, PSCB 10.5, IA 10, UP 9.5, Bihar 9.5, Punjab 9.5.

Raikhy tops

CHENNAI: Current Group N national champion, Manik Raikhy of team JK Tyre, alonwith navigator Vivekanand Punuswamy were declared overall winners of the 16th Popular motor Rally according to reports reaching here. They clocked 2:42:56 seconds to finish ahead of the driver-navigator team of N Leelakrishnan- Farooq Ahmed and Sagar Muthappa-Sandeep Rao.

Naha’s feat

CALCUTTA: Ganesh Naha of Tripura has earned the distinction of becoming the first swimmer from the north-east region tocross the English Channel.Ganesh, 23, who works with the Tripura Sports Department, told a press conference here yesterday that he was also the first swimmer to cross the Channel under the tutelage of a woman coach Ratanmani Raychowdhury.

BANGALORE: The Indian squad for cue game for the forthcoming Asian Games at Bangkok will be picked up on October 10 in Calcutta.

Disclosing this to newsmen here today, coaches Aravind Savur and Michael Fereira said the fourth coaching camp for the probables at the Karnataka State Billiards Association was proceeding well.

Eighteen cueists would be ideal as the tournament would have billiards, snooker, carrom and pool. However, only 15 cueists were in the camp. The coaches were against inclusion of new players in the list but favoured some cueists playing in more than one event.

Randhawa leads

Meerut’s Jyoti Randhawa, who was way down behind the leaders yesterday, netted a three under 67 today to be the joint leader with Vijay Kumar of Lucknow at identical 136 each. Vijay Kumar carded two under 68 today also.

Bengal on top

NEW DELHI: Bengal paddlers continued their domination as they set up title clashes in two more categories in the Airtel Din Dayal Upadhya prize money table tennis tournament. In the sub-junior boys, Jayanta Chandra overcame David Zodin Puia (PSCBA) 21-16, 21-14, 15-21, 21-13 in the semifinal. Jayanta will take on second seed Saurabh Chakrborty.

In sub-junior girls’, Shushmita Roy will face Nandita Saha in another all-Bengal final.
