
Indian boys win, girls beaten
NEW DELHI: Indian boys continued their good run in the World Junior Tennis Championships beating Korea 2-1 to reach the knock-out stage, while the girls crashed to a 0-3 loss against Chinese Taipei. The boys will take on China in the knock-out round while the girls will play Indonesia in the next round, according to an All India Tennis Association release here today.Korea went into the lead when Eui Suk Jung beat P. Vishal Rao 6-2, 6-1. But Parantap Chaturvedi brought India back into the game with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Sung Hag Kim. He later teamed up with Rao to beat Hyung T Kwon and Sung Hag Kim 6-2, 6-4 in the doubles.
In the girls8217; section, Lata Assudani lost to Chin W Chan 1-6, 0-6 in the first singles while Megha Vakharia lost to Su Wei Hsieh 2-6, 1-6. Vakharia and Isha Lakhani went down tamely to Chin W Chan and Hisal H Chao 1-6, 1-6 in the doubles.
Bronze for Vivek
NEW DELHI: Vivek Singh shot his maiden individual international medal when he won abronze in the standard pistol event at the Fort Benning Grand Prix shooting championships at Atlanta US, according to information received here.
He scored 570 out of 600 to take the third place. Olympians Jaspal Rana and Ashok Pandit failed to be among medals logging an identical score of 564. Russians won the gold and silver with a score of 580 and 571, respectively.Later, Rana narrowly missed a medal in the centre fire pistol event as he and two Russians scored an identical 580, but lost out in the tie where he finished fourth. The first place went to an American who shot 583. Pandit and teammate Ved Prakash finished eighth and 17th with a score of 571 and 566, respectively.
Golf team
NEW DELHI: Ashok Kumar, 14, a caddy at the Delhi Golf Club, will make his international debut alongwith Shiv Kapoor, Sandeep Sayal, and Harsh Vardhan Baid as members of the Indian team for the 20th Asia Pacific Golf Championship to be held at the Springfields Resort, Bangkok, from May 12 to 15.
Three otherboys 8211; Neeraj Sareen, Karan Sachdev and Arjun Singh have got direct entries into the championship. A four member girls team comprising Pranita Grewal, Ayesha Kapoor, Irina Brar and Pragya Misra will also be leaving tonight to participate in the individual category.
