Indian women win series
NEW DELHI:
Indian women put up a splendid performance to outclass Germany and clinch 2-0 the three-Test junior hockey (under-21) series which ended in Hanover on March 16. India defeated Germany 3-1 in the first Test on March 14 with Sanggai Chanu, Suman Bala and Kiran Bala sounding the boards.
Coaches’ course
MUMBAI: Twentyfour coaches underwent the ITF Level II coaches’ course, conducted by Spain’s Miguel Crespo and Malaysia’s Suresh Menon, at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) from March 13.
The course was held under the auspices of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the All India Tennis Association (AITA).
Korean squad
NEW DELHI: Hyung Talk Lee will spearhead a four-member South Korean challenge against India in the Davis Cup tie to be held here from April 7 to 9 for a place in the World Group play-off slated for September.
The other members of the team, to be led by non playing captain Won Hung Joo are, Yong Il Yoon, Hee Sung Chung and Seung Hoon Lee
Bridge tourney
CHENNAI: Over 50 teams would be competing for top honours in the seventh all-India KJ Seetharaman Memorial bridge tournament to be held here on March 25 and 26.
Rugby team
CALCUTTA: An Indian colts rugby team will take part in the International Youth Tournament 2000 to be played at King’s Park in Hong Kong from Friday. The Indian Rugby Football Union under-19 team, comprising 20 players, left the city for Hong Kong on Thursday.
Vengsarkar’s denial
MUMBAI: Dilip Vengsarkar has denied allegations that his cricket training institute Elf Academy was altering the basic form of Oval Maidan and assured that it substantially followed the norms set out by the Mumbai High Court on the use of the ground.
In response to a petition alleging neglect in not following the guidelines laid down by High Court earlier, Vengsarkar filed an affidavit refuting allegations and confirming that norms were being adhered to.
Air–India golf
MUMBAI: A record 200 entries have been attracted for the Air–India invitational golf tournament to be held at the US Club on March 26.
The participants include civil and defence top brass, chairmen, managing directors, CEOs and senior executives from the corporate world and public sector undertakings in Mumbai.
U-18 basketball
MUMBAI: The second Savio Club-organised open state level basketball tournament for sub-junior (under-13) and junior (under-18) for boys and girls will be held from April 8 to 20 at the Don Bosco High School courts.

In her new role the Swiss Miss on Thursday launched Matchpoint Against Polio, a campaign to raise awareness and funds to help eradicate the disease from the face of the earth, a faxed release from WHO’s headquarters in Geneva said.
