Wild cards for Sunil, Akshay

NEW DELHI: Newly crowned National champion Sunil Kumar of Chandigarh, his compatriot and boys under-18 National titlist Akshay Vishal Rao were among the four players awarded wild cards for the first two legs of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit. Delhi8217;s Vishal Uppal and SK Shivshankar have also been given wild cards.

In the doubles tournament, three pairs CS Mohanty/ Benjamin Xavier, Akshay Vishal Rao/ Sunil Kumar, Vijay Kannan/ Manoj Mahadevan were given wildcards.

National boxing

SHIMLA: The six-day long 46th Senior National Boxing championship will begin here tomorrow. Asian gold medallist Dingko Singh, Commonwealth silver medallist Jatinder Kumar of Railways, all South Asian gold medallists 8212; including Ali Qumar, Narinder Rana, Sanjit Singh and Gurcharan Singh 8212; will take part in the championship.

Narain placed sixth

CHENNAI: Narain Karthikeyan managed a sixth place in the penultimate round of the Autosport British Formula 3 championship atSilverstone, England, on Sunday, according to information reaching here. Starting eighth on the grid, Narain, driving for Carlin Motorsport, jumped two spots during the 22-lap event. But his sixth position saw him slide one place in the overall championship.

Stewart beckons

CHENNAI: Narain Karthikeyan might switch from Carlin Motorsport to Stewart Racing next year. The Stewart Racing team belongs to former World Formula One champion Jackie Stewart and his son Paul. Incidentally, Jackie Stewart also runs a Formula One team.
