
India began their campaign with a bang on the first day of the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Melbourne winning five medals including two gold.
India won both the men8217;s and women8217;s team gold in Air rifle event, bagged two siver medals in women8217;s sport pistol team and men8217;s trap team as also picked the bronze in the men8217;s free pistol team competition.
Leading India8217;s charge was former World Cup winner Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat 394 and Pournima Zanane 391 who aggregated 785/800 to win the women8217;s Air rifle team gold, a National Rifle Association of India release said here.
Singapore 778 and England 777 won the silver and bronze, respectively.
The gold winning men8217;s team comprised Gagan Narang 592 and Manoj Kumar 591 who tallied 1183/1200 to leave behind Singapore 1167 and hosts Australia 1161.
In women8217;s sport pistol, Sushma Rana 570 and Shweta Chaudhary 568 totalled 1138/1200 to finish second behind Australia 1162. Malaysia 1127 ended third.
India8217;s second silver of the day went to the men8217;s trap team comprising Manavjit Singh 97 and Zorawar Singh 95 whose score added up to 192/200. Australia 194 won the gold and Wales 190 the bronze.
India8217;s lone bronze medal went to Samresh Jung 559 and Mahavir Singh 506 in men8217;s free piston team 1082, which finished behind Australia 1082 and England 1065.
Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore will be seen in action in double trap event on Sunday.
Commenting on his expectations, Rathore said good results would come his way though his focus was on bigger events later in the year.
8220;I view things with a long term perspective. I have chosen to focus my strengths on more importatnt competitions this year like World Shot-gun Championhsips in May and the World Cup final in November,8221; he said.
