Gawli application rejected The designated TADA Judge P K Chavre today rejected the discharge application of underworld don Arun Gawli. Gawli was charged with possession of a sten gun which was recovered from his Dagdi Chawl residence in 1990. A case was filed by the Bombay Police under section 5 of TADA. Gawli had moved for outright discharge just as the trial was to commence. The matter has been adjourned to March 18, 1998, on Gawli's request that he be allowed to move the Supreme Court. Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian appeared for the state.Judge turns down bail plea Principal Sessions Judge AS Aguiar today rejected the anticipatory bail application of Suresh Patil, who has been accused of defrauding the Bank of Maharashtra to a tune of Rs 88 lakh. According to an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation's Bank Security and Fraud Cell based on a complaint filed by the bank's Chief Vigilance officer on October 24, 1997, Patil, a director of Padma Alloy CastingsPrivate Limited and Rakedi Metal Casting Private Limited, floated 6 firms in the names of his friends, relatives and ex-employees. Through these firms, Patil and others availed of various credit and bill discounting facilities. Most of the bills drawn and bank funds were allegedly siphoned off to the tune of Rs 1 crore. A case was registered against the bank's then deputy general manager, MV Soman and others. Opposing the bail plea, the CBI counsel submitted that there was enough evidence to indicate that Patil had floated the firms with the intention of cheating the bank.Taurani wants mobile backThe Tips Cassettes Limited owner, Ramesh Taurani, an accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, has filed an application for return of property before Sessions Judge S P Kukday. Taurani stated that his Tata Estate car (MH 04/Q/5120), mobile phone (98200 45423) and pager (9602-114221) are police custody. The prosecution contends that the car, mobile and pager were used for havala transactions. ButTaurani claimed that the confiscation of his mobile and pager has severely affected his business dealings. Judge Kukday will hear the matter on February 4.
