Mother kills 4 kids, commits suicide
Solapur:
In a gruesome incident, a 33-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping into a well after throwing her four children into the well at Lohara in Osmanabad district yesterday, police said today.

According to the police, Khanamabi Khutepad, fed up with frequent quarrels with her husband, committed suicide after pushing her four children 8211; Yasmin 12, Ejaz 10, Fayyaz 8 and Nazneen 3 8211; into the well.

After receiving a complaint about their disappearance, police conducted a search and found the bodies in the well.

Police have registered an offence against Khanamabi8217;s husband and his paramour.

Firodia award for Kasturirangan
Pune:
The prestigious H K Firodia Awards for Excellence in Science and Technology8217; for the year 1999 will be presented to distinguished scientists by the internationally acclaimed agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan at the Balgandharva Rangmandir on October 1. The award winners this year include Dr K Kasturirangan, Prof M M Sharma and Dr Paul Ratnaswamy.

The Rs two lakh award will be presented to Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan for outstanding contribution for the successful launch of a series of satellites and Prof M M Sharma, the first chemical engineer from India to become a Fellow of Royal Society FRS.

The Pune-based National Chemical Laboratory NCL director Paul Ratnswamy will be presented the Rs one lakh award for his work in the field of industrial catalysis, an official release said.

A Century of Hope 8211; Harmony with Nature and Freedom from Hunger 8211; a book written by Dr Swaminathan on India8217;s food situation in the next century will also be released on the occasion. The book is a part of the I predict8217; series sponsored by the H K Firodia Memorial Foundation.

The program includes audio-visuals on the life and work of the three scientists in their fields of space programmes, chemical engineering and industrial catalysts.
