
PU annual convocation tomorrow
The Punjab University will hold its 49th annual convocation on October 17 at the University auditorium in Chandigarh. The university will confer degrees to the toppers of all graduate and post-graduate classes for the session 1998-99 and students who have completed Ph.D degrees. The university will also confer honoris causa degrees to three persons. Former prime minister I.K. Gujral and author Mulk Raj Anand will be awarded Doctorate of Literature while Dr Ashok will be awarded Doctorate in Science.
Governing body members named
Prof Avanindra Chopra and Prof K.S.Chopra from the departments of English and Economics respectively have been elected to represent the college teachers on the governing body of the college for a period of three years.
SFI seminar on Oct 26 at varsity
The Students Federation of India will hold a seminar on "Privatisation and Commercialisation of Education" on October 26 at the Punjab University campus. In a meeting held on Tuesday, the SFI also decided to organise progressive cultural programmes and Natak Mela in the campus next month, said a statement released by SFI general secretary Jagmeet Sidhu.
Rotary Club to give away 3 awards
The Rotary Club, Chandigarh Midtown, will give away three awards on tomorrow to mark October as a month for vocational services in the Rotary. The awards will be being given away on to Santosh Khurana, an assistant architect, Malkiat Singh a postman, and Kanwar Pal Singh, head constable at the Chandigarh Traffic Police for outstanding services to the community.
According to Suresh Dhawan of the Rotary Club, Chandigarh Midtown, the awardees have been selected by public opinion and members of the Rotary Club. The awards will be given away by Senior Superintendent of Police C.S.R. Reddy.
