KHARAR, Aug 27: Taking a serious note of a warning issued by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Maneka Gandhi against the holding of a Pashu Mandi where cattle were being allegedly sold for slaughter purposes and illegal running of slaughter houses at Kharar, Roopnagar Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu has directed the civil and police administration to ensure the implementation of the directions in letter and spirit.

The Deputy Commissioner directed checking of the illegal export of cattle from the cattle export centre situated at Khanpur village under Kharar municipal limits and closing down of the existing butcher shops at Kharar, which were being run in unhygienic conditions.

Sidhu ordered registration of cases under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, against those persons who have violated the provisions laid down in the Act.

He said the illegal export of cattle for slaughtering purposes and cruelty to animals shall not be tolerated at any cost and strict legal action shall be taken against the culprits.

He asked the SDM to either regulate the number of animals that were brought to the centre and provide proper sheds for them or else immediately close down the illegal cattle export centre.

Meanwhile, Kharar DSP Ashwani Kapoor told Newsline that the police was unable to register cases under the Act against violators, as it had not been notified by the Punjab government.
