SURAT, Nov 5: The Vyara police of the district and the prohibition police raided three different houses of Karanjkhed village in Vyara and seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor IMFL worth Rs 1.75 lakhs. They also arrested eight people for bootlegging.

According to the district police, the first raid was conducted late on Wednesday in the Ugmuthiya Falia area of Karanjkhed by a team led by Vyara PSI S S Bareth.

About 2800 bottles of IMFL whisky and 84 bottles of beer worth Rs 5,100 were seized from the backyard of the house, hidden under a pile of grass. Four people, Dhiruben Basu Kokani, Gangaram Kulash Kokani, Ramsingh Lalu Kokani and Rajesh Sibu Kokani, all from the same family were arrested by the police during the raid.

In another simultaneous raid carried out by prohibition sleuths in Nichla Falia area of the same village and led by Vyara PI K B Jhala, 960 bottles of whisky worth Rs 39,000 were seized by the police. Two persons, Keluben Lallubhai Kokani and Lallu Ramu Kokani were taken into custody during the raid.

In the third raid in the same village, Head Constable Rambhai Bachuibhai and others raided another house from which 366 bottles of IMFL worth Rs 13,500 were seized by the police. Two persons involved in bootlegging namely Kantilal Chaudhary and Devji Dhanji were arrested by the police.

The police said that cases under the Indian Penal Code as well as the Prohibition Act have been registered against the eight accused.
