The cold war between Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Prabha Rau has come to the fore after the MPCC appointed fact-finding committees on various issues plaguing the state.
The differences between Rau and Deshmukh have reached a flashpoint on the report prepared by the MPCC’s fact-finding committee on tribal malnutrition. The committee submitted its report to Rau recently. Portraying the plight of tribals, particularly the malnourished children, it has questioned the state expenditure on tribal welfare.
On Tuesday, when the MPCC convened a meeting of district presidents, office-bearers and ministers to enhance intra-party coordination and solve inter-party differences with the NCP, differences between Rau and Deshmukh came out in the open again. Deshmukh criticised the MPCC’s move to appoint panels, which came out with reports portraying his Government in poor light.
Rau justified the appointments on grounds that the party wanted to gather information on the issues. She said the Government was spending over Rs 1,000 crore on tribal welfare, but their plight indicated that the benefits were not reaching them.
