8226; This refers to Shekhar Gupta8217;s 8216;Parliament lament8217; IE, August 28. The attitude adopted by the NDA and other players in the course of the budget session is highly deplorable.
That veteran parliamentarians like George Fernandes, Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh should have thought it proper to discuss the budget and submit a memorandum to the prime minister outside Parliament and insist they were right in doing so shows utter disregard for the very norms which they were espousing when they were in government! The prime minister8217;s anguish is felt by all right thinking Indians and he need not back down or apologise for his shortlived meeting with the NDA delegation.

8226; Thanks, Shekhar Gupta, for a very balanced article. However, you have missed Sonia Gandhi8217;s name in the list of leaders who could help in solving the crisis. Without her instructions, Congress sycophants will never behave properly.

8226; I Fully agree with the contention in your editorial that attempts to rewrite history textbooks form a dangerous proposition for both students and teachers 8216;Control Freaks8217;, August 27. Even otherwise, the classic debate over what really constitutes history still remains unsettled.
Any attempt to plant periodically novel interpretations of personalities and historical events would only vitiate the intellectual development of the generation on the benches. Those who toy with the idea of rewriting history textbooks should remember Hitler8217;s admission in his autobiography that he was influenced only by two persons in his life 8212; his mother and his history teacher.

It8217;s a long leap

8226; Congratulations to Anju Bobby George for her commendable performance at the Athens Games by jumping 6.83 m, and for being placed sixth among the world8217;s best. It is a measure of her humility when she says, 8220;Say sorry to everybody.
8221; The track event in progress at that point of time did interfere with Anju8217;s concentration and performance. Similar interference happened with India8217;s Henry Rebello in the hop, step and jump event in the 1948 Olympics at Wembley Stadium in London when the Queen of England entered the stadium, and all events in progress were put on hold. Perhaps, in 1948 a gold medal slipped away, and due to a lapse in Rebello8217;s warm-up he pulled a muscle and could not participate further. Can something be done to avoid such contingencies?

8226; Anju has done all of us proud and we really respect and admire her for her fortitude and courage. She has no reason to be apologetic about her performance.

I-trouble

8226; What an article! Harsha Bhogle is absolutely spot on 8212; Indians have a strong sense of the individual and are not known for any collective enterprise 8216;Why there8217;s an 8216;I8217; in Team India8217;, IE, August 28.
