Alarmed by the Mumbai attacks, the hotel industry is turning to security appliance providers to prevent such attacks in the future. According to sources, companies manufacturing metal detectors, X-ray machines and other security appliances have been flooded with orders, primarily from hotel owners.

Anup Gulati, managing director of a US-based electronic appliance company, Garrett, said, 8220;There has been a 100 per cent increase in orders for metal detectors from hotels.8221; Gulati said before the Mumbai attacks, there were just two hotels that had door frame metal detectors DFMDs 8212; the Hyatt Regency in New Delhi and the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai.

8220;Now the Taj and the Maurya Group have asked for DFMDs in their hotels across the country. We expect more to follow suit,8221; Gulati said. 8220;Hand-held detectors are also being ordered,8221; he added.

The company8217;s new-age DFMD model Garret PD 6500i, unlike the previously used DFMDs, enables security guards to locate the exact position of the metal content on the person walking through. It costs about Rs 3.25 lakh. Mukesh Ambani has recently installed one at his residence.

Sita Ram Gupta, chairman of Starwire India Limited, said, 8220;After the Mumbai attacks, the demand has gone up and we are getting orders from security forces across the country. 8221; Gupta added post 26/11, people have suddenly become security-conscious. 8220;We8217;ll be demonstrating our equipment for UP Police soon,8221; he added.

Experts say the Mumbai attacks have certainly changed the way people view security. A senior Delhi Police officer said, 8220;We have always maintained the police force cannot protect each and every person individually. It is also the duty of citizens also to be alert.8221; Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said, 8220;People taking steps to be more alert certainly goes a long way in helping the security forces.8221;
