BRIDGETOWN, MAY 20: Wavell Hinds scored 165, his first Test century, as West Indies threatened to build a big first innings lead against Pakistan in the second Test on Friday.

West Indies were 283 for five in reply to Pakistan’s 253 when bad light stopped play three overs before the scheduled close on the second day. Jamaican Hinds, playing in his fourth Test, completed his 100 before tea with his 16th four in 218 minutes off 150 balls.

The 23-year-old left-handed batsman continued to spray the ball around the ground after reaching his century and his next 50, scored off only 55 balls, included a further seven fours. He was out shortly before the close when he hooked a Waqar Younis delivery into the hands of Inzamam-ul-Haq at mid-on.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, making his Test debut, was 28 not out and nightwatchman Curtly Ambrose (0) at stumps.

Hinds was ably backed by Sherwin Campbell — both made half-centuries before lunch in a 133-run second-wicket partnership — and, later, Sarwan, who quickly overcame some early jitters.

The home side were aided by a good batting pitch and poor Pakistan fielding. The visitors missed three chances to dismiss Hinds when fielders were slow to react to carelessly lofted shots and produced a near comical mix-up before lunch which allowed Campbell to run six off what should have been a harmless single. There were more red faces after tea when Inzamam-ul-Haq dropped Sarwan on seven.

Pakistan were also unhappy about the ball in the morning, complaining repeatedly to the umpires. It was finally changed after 16 overs.

Resuming on two for nought, West Indies suffered an early blow when Adrian Griffith was caught by wicket-keeper Moin Khan off Waqar Younis for four. They quickly recovered, reaching 100 off 25.5 overs and 113 for one by lunch.

Campbell hit sixes in successive overs off Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram and then Hinds gave the Pakistan bowlers a torrid time. Barbadian Campbell, who hit four fours and ran a further six from the Pakistani mis-field, completed his half-century with his third six, two balls before lunch. Campbell eventually went for 58 when he dragged a delivery from Saqlain on to his stumps.

West Indies also lost Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the afternoon session, caught behind by Moin Khan after failing to cope with a vicious Abdur Razzaq delivery. But Chanderpaul had provided valuable support for Hinds, who reached his century shortly afterwards with a four.

The home side progressed to 184 for three by tea and made a further 19 before Adams was out in controversial style as Saqlain claimed his second wicket. The captain was judged to have been caught by Younis Khan but replays suggested the West Indies captain did not make contact with the ball.

Sarwan began nervously but grew in confidence. He and Hinds added 69 for the fifth wicket.
