WASHINGTON, JUNE 4: Taking a big step toward a political race, Hillary Rodham Clinton today said she will form an exploratory committee in July to prepare for a possible campaign for a Senate seat from New York.
8220;I8217;m going to open an exploratory committee in July,8221; she said. 8220;And then I8217;ll spend some time 8212; a lot of time 8212; in New York listening to people and I8217;m looking forward to that.8221;
The First Lady made her comments in an interview on ABC8217;s Good Morning America. Her statement confirmed what her top political adviser had said yesterday that she would form an exploratory committee next month for the seat being vacated next year by Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan. No First Lady has ever run for public office.
It is a race that could pit her against the Republican mayor of New York city, Rudolph Giuliani.
