MUMBAI, Aug 2: The Bombay High Court has rapped the police officers who had handcuffed a senior advocate of Tasgaon in Sangli district of Maharashtra six years ago, and ordered the state government to pay a token compensation of Rs 5,000 to the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa which challenged the police action.

Hearing a petition filed by the bar council, Justice A V Sawant and Justice Chandrashekhara Das recently took a serious view of the matter and ordered payment of compensation within six weeks.

The judges observed that the head constable attached to Tasgaon police station had acted in the most irresponsible manner by handcuffing and parading senior lawyer Jaysingrao Madhaavrao Mane on the street which caused serious and irreparable injury to the persons as well as to the legal profession represented by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.

The bench observed that the irreparable injury caused to the bar council and to the advocate could not be really measured and the advocate adequatelycompensated. The police officers apologised, while the principal secretary to the Home Department, G C Tripathi, tendered an unconditional apology on behalf of the state government to the bar council. He said field officers in the police department have been directed to strictly follow Supreme Court guidelines.
