KOCHI, OCT 6: The division bench of the Kerala High Court hearing the medical/engineering cases on Tuesday gave time till October 8 to the State Government to file a statement regarding the measures it proposed to take to mitigate the difficulties experienced by candidates in view of the revised rank list.

The list had been revised on the orders of the High Court as 49 questions/answer-keys in this year8217;s medical/engineering entrance examination were found to be faulty.

The bench comprising Justices K S Radhakrishnan and M R Hariharan Nair had directed the State Government on September 30 to specify the impact of the revision on the candidates. This had to be done after comparing the original rank list and the revised one.

The bench had also clarified that any arrangement for accommodating those in the original list but not in the present list, could be thought of without prejudice to the rights of those who had been included in the revised list.

Meanwhile, M P Chandrasekharan, principal, Regional Engineering College REC, Kozhikode, informed the High Court that only six students already admitted to the REC would be adversely affected if recounselling is conducted based on the new rank list.

Those students who have been admitted in other RECs could be given the option to change branches by the respective RECs according to their new rank, he said. Classes have commenced in the RECs and sessional examinations are over. Hence, if any fresh student is sent, there will be no guarantee that they will be admitted to the regular batch.

Chandrasekharan also stated that he had made a request to the Director, Technical Education Department, which comes under the Ministry of Human Resources Development to extend the last date of admission to all RECs to October 31.

He prayed that in order to minimise troubles to the students who were admitted, the REC be permitted to counsel only those candidates who had improved their ranks in the revised rank list. Such candidates may not be offered branches and colleges which they had already rejected in their original counselling.

The next hearing is on October 11.
