As the clock sped towards counting day, Chief Minister Ajit Jogi sat closeted with a few party supporters and bureaucrats at home, working out plans for tomorrow, whatever be the results.
Just a day after he boasted of a comfortable win, Jogi reportedly got a feedback on some potential NCP and BSP winners, robbing the Congress of its edge. ‘‘Sarkar to hum bana hi lenge,’’ is what his loyalists had to say. This group included half-a-dozen bureaucrats and a police superintendent who had come in private vehicles to escape media glare.
It maybe all due to his anxiety but Jogi, it seems, has already invited the ire of NCP president Vidya Charan Shukla. This evening, Shukla alleged that Jogi’s son Amit Jogi has been desperately trying to contact his party members, to win over candidates for splitting the NCP. ‘‘They (the Jogis) have not been successful so far. But I am taking due precaution. All winning candidates will be kept together at a safe place till the formation of the government,’’ he declared. Shukla also threatened to pay back in the same coin if there was any foulplay.
BJP state president Raman Singh, who spent his day meeting party seniors, said: ‘‘The day is proving to be a long one for him (Jogi).’’ Asked whether he fears a spilt in the party, Singh said: ‘‘It is now the Congress’ turn. Several Congress MLAs are already in touch with us.’’
At home, Jogi refused to take calls, especially from mediapersons. Only a select few were allowed to meet him. ‘‘I have no time for the media. Wait for the results, we will give you enough time tomorrow,’’ was his reply to journalists.
He even lost his cool when chased by mediapersons at an official function at the Government Medical College Hospital, which he attended with Governor Lt General (rtd) K.M. Seth. ‘‘I am with the Governor. I will not talk politics today,’’ Jogi said.
