Haile Gebrselassie set two world records in the rarely contested one-hour event at the Golden Spike yesterday, eclipsing the mark for the time-limited race and adding another at 20,000 m.

In both events, Gebrselassie broke the 16-year-old marks of Mexico8217;s Arturo Barrios set in La Fleche, France. The Ethiopian completed 21,285 m to beat Barrios8217; mark by 184 m, and finished 20,000 m in 56:25.98 , nearly 30 seconds faster than the previous standard.

The Ethiopian, who dominated long distance running before switching to the marathon and road races in 2005, was supported by three pacemakers at the start.

8220;It8217;s wonderful for my collection,8221; said Gebrselassie, who has set more than 20 world records in his career. 8220;I8217;m glad and I just want to do more records.8221;

It was his second attempt to break the one-hour record, having given up his last try after 39 minutes at a meet in Hengelo, the Netherlands, in 2002. Gebrselassie defeated three Kenyans in the one-hour event. Daniel Limo Kiprop was second having completed 20,271 meters; Edward Kiptum Tabut finished third with 19,380; and Erastus Chirchir was fourth with 18,067.

The Ethiopian said Paul Tergat8217;s four-year-old world marathon record of two hours, 4 minutes and 55 seconds is next, but that it won8217;t be at the World Championships August 25-September 2 in Osaka, Japan.
