NEW DELHI, August 10: Gurpreet Pal Singh 7.5 claimed the Delhi State Chess Championship title when he drew against H.S. Verma 6.5 in the last game here today. Leading the table with seven points, Gurpreet just needed a draw to win the title. This half a point aginst Verma enabled him to push the 12-year-old Tanya Sachdeva to the second spot as she finished with 7 points.

In the championship, five Delhi State champions and 12 international rated players were participating. Both Gurpreet and Tanya were the only unbeaten players in the fray. In the sub-junior championship, Gaurav Gupta and Nivanthee Jayaraj emerged the champions. The meet was conducted at the St Joans School. Gupta remained unbeaten in all the five rounds to score 4.5 points.

Meanwhile, Gaurav Gupta, Manish Unniyal, Varun Sharma and Himanshu Kumar have qualified for the Nationalsub-junior meet to be held at Calicut. In the girls section, along with Nivanthee Jayaraj, Kalpana Negi, Swati and Jasleen Kaur made the grade.
