
VADODARA, May 12: Protesting against alleged corruption and partially in the allotment of about 23 godowns and 27 offices by the District Agricultural Produces Marketing Committee, all the about 100 wholesalers of the Hathikhana Grains market observed a strike on Wednesday.
They also took out a protest rally from Hathikhana up to the Collectorate, and submitted a memorandum with additional collector G Chaudhary in the context. According to Vadodara Grains Merchants Association office-bearers, Wednesday8217;s strike was a token one. The market would operate normally from Thursday.
Association Vice-President Rajnikant Shah told Express Newsline that the merchants suspected corruption as the APMC had not followed rules in advertising and floating tenders for the allotment of godowns and offices. Threatening to further intensify their stir, he added that APMC also charged market yard fee from traders unlike their counterparts in other cities.
Meanwhile, in another development, the district supply officials seized grains and pulses worth about Rs 10 lakh following inspections and subsequent detection of irregularities at two shops in the city during the past two days.
According to official information, the Welcome Grains shop at Hakthikhana was inspected the officials on Tuesday following which it was noticed that there were discrepancies in several accounts pertaining to stocks and sales. Grains worth Rs 8.4 lakh were seized, while furthur investigations were on, officials said.
Likewise, grains and pulses worth Rs 1.5 lakh were seized from one Kirit amp; Company, Chapaner Darwaja, here on Monday after an inspection by the department. Officials said a difference between stocks and sales was also detected there, hence the seizure.
