Responding to a Public Interest Litigation PIL on improving public safety in the Capital, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that the issue is already under consideration by the government following the recent terror strikes in Delhi and Mumbai. The court left it to the Centre and the Delhi government to take appropriate steps.

The bench was hearing the petition filed by advocate Rajeev Awasthi on deployment of security personnel for the protection of VIPs and VVIPs, while security for the general public remain in shambles.

8220;The matter of security has become very sensitive. The Centre and state governments are seriously considering the security of common people and this court has limited power of exercise over the issue,8221; a division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S Muralidhar observed. The court deferred the next hearing for February 4, 2009.

The bench also decided to defer the hearing over directions to Delhi Police to comply with the recommendations of an experts committee.

During the brief hearing, Awasti submitted that the police had given an undertaking before the court for compliance with recommendations that included hiring 700 more personnel by March 2004. But it failed to comply with them. As a result, he submitted, blasts and terror attacks have increased.
