With the festive season round the corner and demand for onion set to gather momentum, the Government has decided to temporarily suspend new permits for export of onions for the next fortnight. The move is expected to ensure availability of onions in the domestic markets till the new harvest comes in.
The development comes after NAFED, the main agency for onion exports, increased the minimum export prices for onions by US$ 50 a tonne to check excessive exports and ensure domestic availability.
With onion prices staying in the range of Rs 24 to 28 per kg in the domestic market, the Government is expecting the new crop from Nasik and Karnataka to give some relief to consumers by the middle of this month.
With the onset of the festive season the demands for onions have risen with wholesale prices soaring to Rs 2,125 to 2,375 a quintal this week against Rs 1,450 a quintal last week.
Traders said there is unlikely to be any respite for the next 15-20 days because of high demand, though there were no problems in arrival of the stock.
