Recognising the need to fill intelligence gaps in view of the recent terror attacks, the Government has set up a task force to prepare a blueprint for revamp of intelligence agencies in six months.
The brainchild of National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, the task force is headed by Dr S D Pradhan, who retired a few months ago as the chief of the Joint Intelligence Committee JIC.
Pradhan has reportedly already approached heads of intelligence agencies, and they have been told to submit their lists of demands and proposals.
Significantly, besides preparing proposals for better coordination between intelligence outfits 8212; including the Intelligence Bureau IB, the Research and Analysis Wing RAW, the National Technical
Research Organisation NTRO and the Defence Intelligence Agency DIA 8212; the task force has also been mandated to look into the implementation of the recommendations made by committees on intelligence gathering after the Kargil conflict.
While the need to augment the number of IB personnel and to revamp state intelligence units has been freely spoken about following the spate of bomb blasts, the shortage of manpower as well as technical upgradation in RAW and NTRO will now be closely looked at by the Pradhan Committee.
While RAW is known to have demanded additional manpower in key foreign missions, the NTRO has recently witnessed a near exodus of senior-level officers.
