SURAT, Feb 4: State Governor V G Balakrishnan on Wednesday visited the multipurpose Ukai Dam on the Tapi river and inspected the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project KAPP, an official release issued here said. The governor also acquainted himself with the different aspects of the two projects, located 15 kms off the taluka headquarters of Vyara in the district, the release added.

Providing information on the dam, executive engineers told the governor that of the numerous multipurpose projects that the State government had taken up, the Ukai Dam, constructed in 1972, was only second in terms of capacity after the Sardar Sarovar Project.

The five-km-long, 225-feet-high dam was constructed at a cost of Rs 108.64 crores and approximately 60,142 hectares of land had to be submerged for constructing the dam, officials present there told the governor.

The officials also explained to Balakrishnan, the safety steps that were being implemented and the precautions that had been taken to ensure minimal damage in case of an emergency. Collector R M Shah, Secretary to the governor Kantilal Patel, Prant Officer Mamata Verma and DSP B D Vaghela accompanied Balakrishnan on his visit to the dam. The governor then visited the hydro-electricity centre at Ukai.

Balakrishnan also visited the Union government controlled atomic power project plant at Kakrapar later in the day. Besides Station Director S Jairam, National Power Corporation NPC Chairman Y S R Prasad was also present for the function.

The officials at KAPP apprised the governor of the various sections of the plant, disposal of hazardous waste and the different stages of production at the plant, which provides electricity to Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Silvassa, besides parts of Gujarat.

Balakrishnan also visited the Swaraj Ashram of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the Mahuva Sugar Factory and other places in the district. A number of top district administration officials and other dignitaries accompanied the governor on his visit.
