The government today announced a new governor and a lieutenant governor for a Union Territory.

Lt-Gen retd Madan Mohan Lakhera, currently serving as lieutenant governor of Pondicherry, has been appointed governor of Mizoram. He will take over from A R Kohli who was appointed by the previous NDA regime.

By appointing Lakhera, the Centre has continued the practice of deputing retired army generals, police and Intelligence chiefs to northeastern states. Currently, the governors of as many as three states 8211;Assam, Nagaland and Tripura 8211; share such a background.

Lakhera joined the army in 1958 after graduating from the Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun. The vacancy in Pondicherry will be filled up by former chief minister and state Congress chief of Arunachal Pradesh Mukut Mithi. His influence in the state party began to wane after Gegong Apang rejoined the Congress from the BJP two years ago ahead of the state assembly polls.

Besides, Bihar Governor RS Gavai has been given additional charge of Sikkim as that state8217;s governor A Rama Rao will be on leave from July 13.
