
CHANDIGARH, March 28: It was a good start for the Indian golfers on the opening day of the International team championship, which began here at the Chandigarh Golf Course. The hosts India fielded two teams A8217; whose members are Harmeet Kahlon and Digvijay Singh were leading with a total score of 156 followed by India B8217; which were a stroke behind the leader. The B8217; team comprises of Amit Luthra 75 and Amish Jaitha 82.
While the other golfers found the going tough8217; on a warm and windy day, the ace Indian amateur golfer Harmeet Kahlon was two over par 74, which was the best card of the day. Harmeet had birdies on the 4th and 5th hole and was at par on the 8th and 11th. However, it was not the same for Digvijay, who returned a card of 10 over par 82.
The Pakistan team of Vaqas Ahmed and Ahmed Ali Shah were close on the heels of the India8217;s B8217; with a total score of 158. 8220;It was a bad day,8221; said Vaqas Ahmed who shot nine over 81. However, his team-mate Ahmed Ali pulled his act together on the back nine to card five over par 77. 8220;My putting let me down today,8221; said Ahmed, who missed two-feet putt on the 10th hole.
However, the Sri Lankan golfers, which is the the third team in the fray were unable to combat the course and were lying at the fourth spot with a total score of 163. 8220;The course is very tough, said Anura Rohana, who was nine over par 81. His team-mate Laith Kumara was 10 over par 82.
The 98th Amateur Golf Championship will commence tomorrow at the same venue and more than sixty golfers would be vying for top honours, including golfer from Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
India8217;s ace golfer Harmeet Kahlon is top seed while Digvijay and Amit Luthra are second and third seed, respectively.
Vaqas Ahmed of Pakistan is seeded 8th in the meet.
