Once at loggerheads, Dalmiya now all praise for Ganguly
CAB boss offers Sourav senior Bengal captaincy, says state team needs him in this hour of crisis
That Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sourav Ganguly don8217;t share the best of relationships is the worst-kept secret in Indian cricket. However, on a special day like this, the veteran cricket administrator didn8217;t mind showering praises on Ganguly, who has in the past openly gone against him over issues off the field.
In an unusual change of guard, CAB president Dalmiya heartily welcomed the national selectors8217; decision to persist with the former Indian captain for the upcoming Tests against Australia. Speaking to reporters after a 10-minute closed-door chat with Ganguly at his Eden Gardens office, Dalmiya said: 8220;We are all happy for him Ganguly. I wish him all the best for the two Tests against Australia.8221; Not very elaborate, but strong enough comment, considering the kind of uneasy stand-off they have had ever since the Greg Chappell-email leak episode in September 2006.
Dalmiya also said that an experienced warhorse like Ganguly doesn8217;t need anybody8217;s backing to earn his place back in the national team.
Interestingly, Dalmiya also pointed out that he has requested Ganguly to lead the senior Bengal team in the upcoming Ranji Trophy. 8220;I8217;ve talked to him to play for Bengal in the domestic season. I have also requested him to take up the senior Bengal captaincy at this critical juncture when we are relegated to the Plate Group. He is the best person to lead the side and take Bengal into the Elite Group again. Ganguly8217;s presence will inspire and motivate the youngsters in the team to perform.8221;
