
PANAJI, JANUARY 4: Expatriates from Goa scattered in different countries of Europe, America, Australia, Africa and the Middle East have joined hands to form an umbrella organisation, Worldwide Goans8217; to bring together all associations of Goans around the world. According to Dr Aires Rodrigues, convenor of Worldwide Goans8217;, the body will attempt to resolve the problems of the Goan diaspora.
Rodrigues, a medical practitioner who returned home for good after a 15-year stint in England, said his organisation will attempt to protect the cultural identity of the people of Goan origin. The ad hoc committee of Worldwide Goans8217; has several professionals from different countries many of whom were in Goa over the New Year weekend.
The body has already begun lobbying with the State Government to set up a separate department under it to deal with non-resident Indians from the state. 8220;During the Gulf war, the State Government did not even know how many Goans were stranded in Kuwait,8221; Rodrigues said. The body isalso lobbying with the State Government to relax domicile conditions for children of NRIs who try to obtain admission in educational institutions in the state. In addition the organisation will also enable the people of Goa to make use of the expertise of Goans abroad, Rodrigues said.
He noted that Worldwide Goans8217; is taking the initiative to assist Goans visiting foreign countries. 8220;The network is already helping people visiting London, US, Australia and other countries so that they do not feel out of place,8221; said.
