The Goa Cabinet today resolved to suspend the post of Director General of Police, on the ground that such a post is not prevalent in the Indian union and many states have already abolished the post. The move has triggered speculation, given that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s relations with DGP Amod Kanth are strained.

The state BJP chief had made allegations of molestation and pending inquiry against the DGP last week. Taking cue from the indications given by his party leadership, the chief minister announced this decision which could also pave the way for promoting more officers of the IPC cadre from the police service of the state.

Now, the state government will be able to appoint a state officer on the post of Inspector-general of police, after the Centre’s approval. ‘‘We have already written to the Central Government for their consent,’’ Parrikar said.

Kanth was reportedly ‘‘distributing’’ responsibilities from amongst his subordinates without consulting Parrikar who holds the Home portfolio.
