MUMBAI, JULY 27: The student council of the government-run Grant Medical College, constituted in mid-July, has been dissolved and a three-member committee appointed by the dean to investigate complaints that it was set up as per the law.
The Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, states that student councils in colleges must constitute nominated members, who are shortlisted according to merit. However, the students’ body for 1998-99, whose term expired in June, comprised elected members. The council for 1999-2000 was also constituted in violation of the act.
Candidates had first been asked to submit their names for an election. Some of these were later nominated to various posts.
