McLaren squealed to FIA

FRANKFURT: A McLaren-Mercedes engineer tipped Formula One officials that rival Ferrari was using oversized aerodynamic deflectors at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, the mass-circulation newspaper Bild said.

Bild, in a front-page report, said the tip about the oversized deflectors allegedly came from Adrian Newey, a McLaren engineer, who reportedly studied photographs of the Ferrari deflectors taken at Nuerburgring, the site of the previous GP. McLaren then waited for a good opportunity to alert Fia about the infraction.

Bollegraf retires

THE HAGUE: Manon Bollegraf, who won four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles in a career spanning 14 years, has retired.

The 35-year-old winner of nearly $ 2 million in prize money, recently had surgery on a knee and had decided against a comeback at the international level, the ANP agency said.

The two-handed backhander won Grand Slams with Tom Leach in the French Open in 1989 and the US Open two years later.

Ntiniappeals

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa’s first coloured Test cricketer, Makhaya Ntini, appealed his rape conviction, saying the act had taken place by consent and there was no rape. Arguing at a packed Grahams Town high court in the eastern Cape Province, senior counsel for Ntini told the court that the woman had willingly joined Ntini and consented to sex.
