Argentina beat Brazil

BUENOS AIRES: Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernan Crespo scored a goal apiece to give Argentina a 2-0 victory over Brazil in the first of two friendly Superclassicos between the South American powers.

With a break in European League play, both sides recalled their top players, including Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Roberto Carlos for Brazil and Fernando Redondo, Ariel Ortega, and Claudio Lopez for Argentina. Only lead striker Gabriel Batistuta was absent due to a knee injury.

BEIJING: Chinese weightlifter Wang Yanmei successfully heaved 123.5 kilograms to break the world record in the women’s over-75kg snatch, Xinhua news agency reported. Wang’s title at the Asian Weightlifting championships came minutes after compatriot Zhang Nan had also surpassed the old record with a 123-kg lift, Xinhua said. The previous world mark was 122.5 kgs set by Wrobel Egata of Poland in July.

Klim’s third mark

CANBERRA: Australian Michael Klim got his third shortcourseswimming world record of the national titles on Sunday, breaking the 50m butterfly in a special time trial.

Klim clocked 23.21 seconds to shave 0.09 seconds off the previous mark held by Milos Milosevic of Croatia.

Bridge blitz

LONDON: Millionaire bridge champion Zia Mahmood defeated seven computers after a 14-hour match.

“It was much more difficult than I anticipated. I was petrified a lot of the time,” Zia, who won $ 10,000, said in a press release.

Two years ago, IBM’s Deep Blue computer beat world chess champion Gary Kasparov, and seven software firms from Britain, US, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan had devised programmes to try to replicate the feat at bridge.

Becker dad again

MUNICH: German tennis star Boris Becker became a father for the second time when his wife Barbara gave birth to a baby boy, a spokesman at a Munich hospital said. Elias Balthazar, a 7.5 pound baby arrived on Saturday. His older brother Noah Gabriel, is five.
