Two die in Mexico’s Confed Cup victory celebrations

MEXICO CITY: A 10-year-old girl and a teenager were killed in the Mexican capital as crowds took to the streets in celebration after Mexico won the inaugural Confederations Cup. Another 20 people were injured as tens of thousands of people gathered overnight at the Independence Monument after Mexico won the cup, defeating Brazil 4-3 Wednesday. A 10-year-old girl was run over by a car in front of the monument while a 17-year-old teenager was electrocuted as he walked out of the Azteca Stadium, where the game was played. He apparently touched an electric cable that had fallen on a pedestrian bridge.

ROQUEBRUNE-CAP-MARTIN (FRANCE): The Riviera home of French World Cup winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez and his supermodel girlfriend Linda Evangelista was burgled Wednesday night as the couple slept upstairs. The thieves, who broke into the home through a downstairs window, made off with $170,000 worth ofjewellery, a portable computer and a mobile phone.

Sex weakens pro footballers’ knees

LONDON: Professional footballers can literally go weak at the knees if they have too much unprotected sex, doctors have discovered. Research carried out among 10 sportsmen, six of whom were footballers, showed that persistent knees injuries were often a form of arthritis caused by a sexually-transmitted bacteria, the New Scientist magazine reported.

Sexually-acquired reactive arthritis, or Sara, was found to be responsible for typical symptoms such as swollen or sore knees in eight of 10 cases examined.

Pybus bypasses suggestions of fixing

CAPE TOWN: Suspended Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has received a vote of confidence from the man who helped the side reach the World Cup final. Richard Pybus, the English-born South Africa-based coach who was given a short term contract as assistant to Mushtaq Mohammed, has lashed out against suggestions that Pakistan “threw” some matches, including the final.“I can only speak with certainty about the World Cup, but during the two months that I was with the team I had and still have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that everything was above board and beyond reproach,” Pybus said.
