Gilhotra granted bail

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 11: Former PSEB chief engineer J.C. Gilhotra has been granted bail by Justice M.L. Singhal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court here in the Engineering Department kickbacks case.

Pronouncing the orders, Justice Singhal observed in the open court: quot;Keeping in view the fact and circumstances of the case, I think bail should be allowed to him as keeping him in jail indefinitely as an undertrial, will not be condusive to justicequot;.

Gilhotra had earlier been booked by the UT Vigilance Department under the Prevention of Corruption Act in the FIR registered against former UT Chief Engineer K.K. Jerath. According to the prosecution, his name had been mentioned in the diaries recovered from the residences of the alleged middlemen during the raids by the income-tax authorities in November 1997.
