Germany turned in a characteristic fighting performance to beat Mexico 2-1 and make the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

A golden goal by Laurent Blanc enabled hosts France down a fighting Paraguay yesterday. France who now play Italy in the quarter-finals were joined by Denmark who completed a resounding 4-1 victory over Nigeria in another second-round match.
