Civic body would move out of the Town Hall soon. Here8217;s how it plans the upkeep of its old headquarters
Constructed in 1860, the Town Hall is one of the Capital8217;s oldest buildings. The municipality cannot do much structural alteration since it is a heritage site but there are plans to make convert Town Hall into a five-star inn with a museum, theme parks, food courts, amphitheatre, library, and a bazaar on the lines of Dilli Haat.
The civic body expects to generate revenue for the project. 8220;The project would be created on Build, Own, Operate, Transfer BOOT basis,8221; an MCD official says. 8220;It will start soon after MCD moves to the Civic Centre next year.8221;
The building at present has nine fragments: the main building, press building, dispensary, barracks, Dangal Maidan, Mahatma Gandhi Maidan, children8217;s park, women8217;s park, pension building and a godown.
Main Building
At present housing all MCD departments, the building is slated to pave way to a five-star inn. According to MCD8217;s survey, the first floor, with its huge rooms and open verandahs, is ideal for a hotel. The meeting hall, which can hold up to 300 people, would most likely give way to a theatre or a convention hall.
Press Building
The high ceilings and long halls of the building is ideal to provide uninterrupted space for a museum, says the MCD study.
As per plans, an experiential and interactive museum would be built, with galleries and the walls providing creative and meaningful content. The museum walls would depict the city8217;s history: from pre-Mughal to post-Independent Delhi.
Mahatma Gandhi Maidan, children8217;s park, women8217;s park
At GANDHI MAIDAN, MCD proposes a light-and-sound park, much like the one that has been drawing crowds for years at the Red Fort. The light-and-sound show would focus on Delhi8217;s history and enact scenes from the freedom struggle, with emphasis on the British-era Town Hall.
CHILDREN8217;S PARK would be redeveloped to attract family gatherings. Proposed essentially as a hub of cultural activities, the park would host and organise kathputli puppet shows, folk dances, music events, open-air cinema and laser shows.
WOMEN8217;S PARK would be dedicated to India8217;s women achievers.
Dispensary
Proposed to be converted into an art gallery-cum-library. The library, the municipality says, would stock titles on Delhi8217;s history, culture, literary treasure, scientific contribution, music, and art.
Barracks and Dangal Maidan
Close to the Old Delhi Railway Station, MCD plans a bazaar, ala Dilli Haat, with a commercial centre along with food courts here. A multi-level underground parking is also proposed at the site.
Pension dept and Godown
This, as per plans, would be developed as an exclusive food court. Plans are afoot to get a taste from across the city: fares right from the paranthe-wali gali to the new food chains.
