MUMBAI, January 16: Four corporators were today arrested by the Thane police, and suspension of two Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) engineers ordered by the district election authorities for violation of the model code of conduct for the coming Lok Sabha elections.Three functions in all had taken place in Thane without the permission of the police, after prohibitory orders were enforced under Section 37 (3). The BJP's Pramod Mahajan had presided over a function to provide additional water supply to Brindavan Housing complex in Thane. The collector took serious notice of this and sought an explanation from the TMC. Other functions were the beautification of the Gandhi Nagar lake and the starting of construction work of the Mumbra path way.The Brindavan society function was held on January 3, the Gandhi Nagar function on December 29 and the one at Mumbra on January 10. Regarding beautification of the lake and construction of the path way, tenders were finalised in one single day and work was started in violation of the code of conduct. The district collector has ordered Thane municipal commissioner T Chandrashekar to suspend the two engineers, R Misal and Gaikwad, who passed the tenders. The police said the arrested corporators were Rajan Kini (Ind) of Mumbra, Mahendra Komurlkar (Shiv Sena) of Thane, and Milind Patankar and Madhavi Donde-Naik (both BJP). The collector also said he has asked the police to take further action against Pramod Mahajan and sitting MP from Thane Prakash Paranjpe for violating the code.
