It proved to be more than a golden day for Indian shooters at the Asian Championships in Kuala Lumpur. Not only did the Indians win two gold medals to boost their tally to four gold and one bronze, they also, more importantly, clinched four ‘quota’ berths for the Athens Olympics in trap, Air Rifle (men) and Sports Rifle 3 Position events.

With four more Olympic berths, the Indian shooters have now got seven ‘quota’ places so far. Among the shooters who have won the berths include Anjali Vedpathak, Abhinav Bindhra, Major RVS Rathore, Mansher Singh, Manavjit Singh, Gagan Narang and Deepali Deshpande.

After a fine performance yesterday, both Mansher and Manavjit had entered the trap finals and as expected clinched Olympic berths. But the icing on the cake was the individual gold that Mansher won with a score of 23/25 in the finals.

Manav shot a point less and could not finish among the medallists after having shot a poor 118 to 121/125 by Mansher in the qualifying rounds yesterday.

With three ‘quota’ places available in the event Manav, despite finishing fifth, got it as the silver and bronze medallists and the fourth finisher today had already won their ‘quota’ places. The third berth went to Naser Mohammed of Kuwait. Similarly Deepali too did enough win an Olympic berth.

Ronak Pandit claimed his second gold today in the junior Standard Pistol event after he shot 561/600.
